This can be a tricky dilemma for a candidate anxious to accept a new position.  The compensation and the prestige can be very alluring.  Prior to accepting a position that is offered, a superintendent must reflect very thoughtfully about the landscape ahead which includes the next Board election and the make-up of the Board as he/she begins a superintendency.  Sometimes as much as it hurts it is better to walk away from an offer that while a great pay and compensation increase, is not a good fit.

In his Book Beyond Theories and Degrees: The Alley Smarts of Educational Leadership, author Dr. James Fitzpatrick in Part 3 discusses the serious considerations before accepting a superintendency appointment.
