Every year new Board Members are elected by local citizens. They may have any number of reasons for choosing to run for the Board. It is a missed opportunity when a superintendent does not take the time to induct a new board member who undoubtedly needs briefings and trainings (often provided by state Board Associations), as they begin their Board membership. Most Board member terms are for three years. In that course of time, a Board member will need to become knowledgeable about the role of the Board in shared governance, district policy, and oversight as it relates to student achievement and continual improvement. New Board members need to know that while they may have some particular issues for running for the Board, they will be required to deal with ALL ISSUES.
